Identifying Acquisition Targets

Client: Global Oil and Gas Company

Challenge

A major business unit of an oil and gas giant engaged us to evaluate the potential for acquisition as an effective way of gaining critical mass in a fast-growing global market for services related to their core business.

Approach

STRATEGIC PLANNING: After a series of stakeholder interviews and desk research examining best practice, we drew up an investment strategy outlining the broad options for expansion.

SUCCESS MODELLING: Determining the critical success factors for acquisition by developing a clear acquisition evaluation model tailored to the business unit’s requirements.

ACQUISITION MAPPING: Identifying and profiling potential acquisition targets through an analysis of client/service portfolios, then examining how each target complemented the unit’s exiting portfolio.

INVESTMENT & ROADMAP PLANNING: Designing a recommended investment plan and best-estimates of projected return on investment for selected targets, with a timings and resourcing roadmap for acquiring the target companies.

INTEGRATION STRATEGY: Developing a high level integration plan, including a post-acquisition organisation structure, to deliver the five-year growth vision.

Outcome

Strong internal buy-in to the strategy, leading to a number of successful acquisitions.
