Welcome to the July newsletter which finds us busily engaged on projects across a number of fronts in the UK and internationally. One of our more interesting projects recently was an assignment for a long term client helping them to understand the dynamics of the mid market, across sectors and regions globally. Coincidentally, mid-sized businesses are one of 6 key areas of focus in the second phase of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills' 2011 Growth Review. It does seem that the mid market is currently an area of strong interest and we are therefore planning to hold a seminar on the topic, as you will see below - please sign up if you are interested.

Our work to understand the drivers of employee productivity and social capital is continuing for a broad range of clients and we are currently finalising a piece entitled 'Intangibles at Work - Measuring and Managing Performance'. Look out for it in our next newsletter. We are also building a benchmark database around the measurement of the performance of intangible assets which we think many clients will find invaluable, particularly since hard data has historically been difficult to access in this area. On a related topic, also included in this newsletter is a link to a piece on building corporate brand equity and the impact of the branded workplace - we hope you will find it a quick and interesting read.

Understanding the mid market

The mid market is usually categorised as being made up of firms turning over somewhere between £25m and £500m. As such, its scope is broad, and clearly circumstances and needs will vary considerably from the lower to the upper turnover bands of the category, which makes it a particularly interesting market to consider. Larger firms may be on the cusp of becoming truly global players. What will be the triggers of their transition? Those just tipping £25m are likely to be still evolving from an SME and going through the associated growing pains. How do they make the next big leap?
