Prize winning analysis - posted October 2011

One of the services which we frequently provide for clients is quantifying the business opportunity in markets for which they have only limited data. They are usually looking to identify the ‘size of the prize’ as a focus for business development activities.

We have just completed a major project of this type for a financial services client in which we sized 25 markets worldwide across 20 trade sectors. Within sectors we broke market sizes down by revenue and number of companies, established our clients share in each and set out the scope of the new business opportunity for them in granular detail.

Our approach started with desk research to bring together and sift multiple data sources. We modelled market sizes and then matched the client’s raw internal data to market data to compute market share. We organised with the client over 2,000 lines of business into 12 offer categories and indentified opportunities by market, sector and sub sector for each. Particularly for less developed markets (often where the greatest potential lies) and where off the shelf data sources are patchy, clients find this kind of ‘size of the prize’ mapping exercise invaluable.
